Learn a Skill for a Lifetime of Creating!

Drawing

“The job of the teacher, as I see it, is to teach students, not how to draw, but how to learn to draw.  They must acquire some real method of finding out facts for themselves lest they be limited for the rest of their lives to facts the instructor relates.  They must discover something of the true nature of artistic creation – of the hidden processes by which inspiration works.”  Nicolaides

Letting Go of What We Know (in 4 sessions) – This is a very beginning drawing class focused on exploring various ways we can observe, interpret, and draw from life.  The exercises and ideas we cover can help many learn to shut off the side of the brain and begin using the right side of the brain; a basic issue with most people who struggle with drawing.  A couple of resources I use for this class are the books Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and The Natural Way to Draw

Drawing from Life I (in 4 sessions) – This class will explore various ways to observe, interpret and draw from life using line.  We will cover concepts such as blind contour and contour drawing, gesture drawing, and sight observation by comparison.  We will use our hands, the clothed figure, and still life set ups as our means of observation.

Drawing from Life II (in 4 sessions) – This class will explore various ways to observe, interpret, and draw from life using shape as value and form.  We will work each week from a still life, and/or drapery set up.  The class will explore how to interpret what we see by looking at major lights and darks, negative space, light source direction, and learning to work from broad to more specific.

Advanced Drawing Techniques and Concepts (in 4 -8 sessions) – This is an advanced class focused on stimulating and challenging both drawing facility and conceptual ideas.  Scheduling and fees vary.

Facial Structure Basics(2 hours) – This is a session on learning basic facial structure in order to draw better portraits/ faces.  There are some general ratios and relationships you can learn that will make it easier for you to draw people’s faces from observation.  This is a basic class or refresher course for someone who has not drawn in a while.

Open Studio” (2 hours) – Each session will have a still life and/or drapery set up.  Bring your favorite water-based media and draw/ paint how you wish.  This is great for those who might not have space in their own home but love to paint or draw, or for those who enjoy working in community.  This is an open, self-guided environment meant to foster a community of artists that can help each other grow in their own art practice.

Drawing for Kids(1-2 hours) – Each class is theme coupling making art with art history.  They are aimed at teaching age appropriate drawing concepts, exploring various drawing tools, and keeping it fun!

Painting

At this time, my studio is not equipped to work with oils.  All painting classes use acrylics and other water-based media.

In the Beginning (sessions vary) – We study the basic elements of design, color, and color-mixing.  We explore types of brushes and their uses.  This class also can explore both painting on paper and/or canvas.  Scheduling and Fees vary by specific interests.

Painting for Kids (1-2 hours) - Each class is theme coupling making art with art history.  They are aimed at teaching age appropriate painting concepts, exploring various water-based media and brushes, and keeping it fun!

Creative Awakenings

“Making images is as natural a human endeavor as speaking. . . (Often) we have learned to be embarrassed by our efforts. (Sometimes) we simply cease doing it altogether. . . . (Let us) return visual expression as a natural and full language to every person and to enable everyone to employ this means of expression. . . . to speak about the world as it is, and to create a world of our choosing.”  Peter London

Each class is 2 hours.  We learn ways to discover or rediscover our creative spirit within.  We learn to tame inner critic, give permission to create, and have fun with the creative process.  We ask questions such as “what does the word “creative” mean to me?”

We also learn ways of putting purpose to our doodles in things like discernment and goal setting, and ideas for keeping a creative journal.

Visual forms of Prayer (varies) – We explore praying and meditating using the visual arts.  Scheduling varies by interest.  Groups are welcome to contact me for further information.
